I think I speak on behalf of the entire section when I say that I really enjoyed the Section 14 experience. We have a great group of people in this section and I enjoyed being classmates with every one of you. Thank you all for making these past 8 months something that I will always remember.

Good luck on finals and good luck on whatever your summer has in store for you. Hopefully we will have ample opportunities to get together over the next few months for a little R&R. And while today is the last day we will all be together as a class, I look forward to sharing the next two years and beyond with you all.

Thanks again for the good times.

Peace,
Ryan

Neil Chilson: The Candidate's Statement.

Below is the candidate statement that will appear in the Nota Bene this week before the GWU Student Bar Associate elections on Wednesday. Neil is running for 2L Senator. Another Section 14'er, Nick Sloey, is running for SBA President. Read his statement here. Carley Grey, also from Section 14, is running for Day Divison Senator. Vote Section 14!

I write this statement on the eve of a momentous event, mere hours away from a high point of my tenure as Section 14 Senator. Tomorrow, Section 14 is sponsoring Mustard Taste Test 2005 and I am extremely proud of my role in organizing this event.

You may be wondering, “Didn’t Neil help rewrite the SBA constitutional bylaws? Didn’t he help get more Diet Coke? He even set up a blog for his section! And I heard he’s never missed an SBA meeting. How is tasting mustard more important than those things?”

You hate mustard, don’t you?

Then your friend chimes in: “Didn’t Neil organize a Section 14 moustache contest? And a section happy hour that lasted eight? Can mustard tasting party like THAT?”

Ketchup lover.

Then some guy you don’t know speaks up: “I heard that during Neil’s tenure, Section 14 raised more than $100 dollars for the ‘Light The Night’ walk and over $200 dollars for the Tsunami Relief Fund.”

Ok. Some things ARE more important than mustard. As your 2L SBA senator, I’ll continue to organize for you – both silly and serious. See neilchilson.com or section14.blogspot.com for more details.

And vote Neil Chilson for 2L Senator.

Mustard Taste Test 2005 a Huge Success!

The first ever GW Law School mustard tasting was a resounding success! Over 25 different mustard were available for the General Tasting which took place during Thirsty Thursday last week. We knew we had a successful event when there were more people tasting our delicious mustards than were in line for Beer! We went through a huge amount of bread, pretzels, sausages, hot dogs, cheese, and - of course - mustard. If you missed us in the Hard Lounge, you missed BIG.
During the Participant Tasting which took place earlier that day, all the participants voted on their favorite mustards. Here are the results:

Best Brown: Kosciniuco, brought by Erick Carrera

Best Sweet Hot: Rayes, brought by Jered Matisse

Best Honey / Specialty: Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, brought by Casey O'Connor

Best in Show / Chef's Choice: Deloius Fils Dijon, brought by Jered Matisse

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all the participants for making this an AWESOME event. I am honored to be invited. This statement will appear in the Nota Bene on Tuesday, February 22. If anyone has any questions or concerns that you feel need to be brought up in the dialogue for SBA president feel free to email me at nsloey@law.gwu.edu. If you can take the time to email me, I can take the time to answer. The elections will be held on Wednesday. Just sign onto your portal and you can vote online.

I will offer consistency and deliver action. I will work with all student groups to make sure that the funding that is already in place isn’t left as a surplus. SBA will not keep one dime for later when it can be in the hands of student groups now. When the SBA has a responsibility we will follow through every time, not just when we get around to it or when it serves our purpose.

I believe the ideas out there are good. But I will bring action. Along with the heating problems and the internet issues, these ideas will not sit in committee all year. The problems need to be fixed now, so we can use our resources for new ideas. GW is moving into elite status as a law school. We need to take advantage of this city and the alumni to institute a networking system. SBA should set the standard for taking bold steps and paving the way for new student opportunities. “If you vote for me, all of your wildest dreams will come true. Thank you.”

Vote Nick Sloey for SBA President

How to Clap Like a Seal

1. The price of tickets will be $45 from today until Friday, January 28th. For the week before Barrister's, tickets will be $50. You can get your tickets at the info desk (cash & checks) or online (credit cards). Also, anyone that purchases a ticket before this Friday (January 21st) will be entered into a drawing to have the ticket price refunded to them. So purchase your ticket early to be entered to receive your ticket for free.

The evening will be Friday, February 4th with doors opening at 9:30 pm until 2:00 am at the JW Marriott located at 1331 Pennsylvania (on the corner of 14th and Penn). It is a great facility, with an extensive menu of food and drinks included in your ticket for the evening. All are invited and welcome.

You can get your tickets online at:
http://www.law.gwu.edu/stdg/sba/events.html

If you choose to purchase your ticket online, please bring the confirmation to the info desk to receive your actual ticket (you cannot just bring the confirmation to the door). Also, there is a $1 service charge for online tickets.

For those students that are new to law school, Barrister's Ball is a tradition at most law schools - an evening out with all your fellow students and guests. Last year, over 700 people attended and it was a great event all around. The event itself is semi-formal, has plenty of food and beverages (both non-alcoholic and alcoholic), dancing, and socializing. It isn't something you need a date for; just come in a group or meet people at the event. You can invite non-law school students to the event as well. It's fun -- you'll probably never see so many law students dancing to the electric slide at one place... It is one of the highlights of the school year according to many alums.

Please note, that the hotel policy is that tickets CANNOT be sold at the door. The wins put them into the Elite Eight in the Flag Football Championship Tournament. With the two victories, Toejam extends its current winning streak to five games.
Toejam got on the board early in the first game, with a touchdown pass on the first drive from quarterback Casey O'Connor to offensive workhorse Nick Sloey. After a successful conversion, Toejam was quickly up 7-0. On the very next play, the defense put six on the board when O'Connor ran back an interception for a touchdown. The ensuing conversion attempt was successful thanks to a circus act catch by tight end Ryan Smith. O'Connor threw up a pass that appeared to be on its way to being intercepted. However, the ball bounced off the defender's hands at which point, Smith (utilizing his rather extensive vertical leap) jumped up and tipped the ball over the defender's head and caught it behind him in the endzone to make the score 14-0. After the other team scored to make it 14-6, Toejam put the first game away with a touchdown reception by Peter Eicker (section 11). Following an interception by Steve Smyers, it appeared that Toejam scored again late on a dazzling 50 yard run by O'Connor, but a combination of unsportsmanlike complaining on the part of the other team and questionable officiating led to the play being overturned by a dubious procedural penalty. Being the men of high character and sportsmanship that they are, however, the boys didn't let it get them down, and they ran out the clock to claim victory and advance to the next round of the playoffs.
The second game of the day marked quite possibly the most impressive victory of the season thus far for Toejam. A season of dedication and hard work paid off as the team came together as a cohesive unit to earn a hard fought victory. Despite facing a team with a 5-0 regular season record, Toejam never waivered in their belief that they would come out on top. After being forced to punt on their first possession, the Toejam defense stood strong and prevented the other team's offense from getting any points on the board. It appeared as if the other team was about to score, until an O'Connor interception in the endzone turned the momentum back in Toejam's favor. Following the turnover, the team marched the length of the field to score on yet another touchdown by Sloey. The other team tied the game at six with a touchdown of their own. After this, and knowing their season was on the line, Toejam stepped it up and took the lead for good on a spectacular sliding catch at the side of the endzone by Tyler Moore. It was now in the hands of the defense to shut down the other team and secure the victory, and they didn't disappoint. Despite the fact that the officials seemed to be doing everything in their power to help the other team (on the final drive of the game, they had more yards of penalties than they did of offense), the defense stood strong and forced a turnover on downs. The key play of the drive was an amazing play by Jered Mattthysse to break up a third down pass. After getting the ball back with very little time left, Toejam appeared to get another touchdown, but again questionable officiating brought back the touchdown. It didn't matter to the team, however, as they were able to maintain control of the ball until time expired and claim their second win of the day.
All in all, it was an outstanding day of football from the men of Toejam. It was obvious that the team really gelled today It was definitely a team win in both games, as every player involved contributed. The importance of the teamwork and determination possessed by Toejam was evident, as both of their opponents struggled once they fell behind and stopped working together. Toejam goes on to play next Saturday, and the team is looking forward to bringing the championship to section 14.
As Chris Mooney says, "Know the Toe."

Section 14 Flag Football Team Scores First Win Of Season.

The Section 14 Flag Football Team scored their first win of the season today, beating their opponent 26-6. Team Toejam, led by veteran quarterback Casey "Hoss" O'Connor, dominated on both sides of the ball. The play of the game was made by Nick "Shreck" Sloey, who dazzled players and spectators alike with an amazing open field run after a short catch. Deep in their own zone, O'Connor threw a short pass to Sloey, who proceded to turn on the jets and make a highlight-reel run, complete with multiple spin moves and stutter steps. In a standout performance, O'Connor threw for four touchdowns - three to Jered "Burgle Master" Matthysse and one to Chris "Mother" Dean. It looked like he had a fifth TD when he completed a pass to a wide open Peter "Mr. Simmons" Eicker (Section 11, but we love him anyway), but Eicker didn't realize he was still a yard short of the end zone when he stopped running. O'Connor was given plenty of time to set up in the pocket and throw, thanks to a dominating offensive line led by Sloey, Ryan "Bodyguard" Smith and Bryan "Boyfriend Voice" Mohler. The defense played just as well. Defensive ends Dean and Steve "Cruiser" Rice put pressure on the opposing quarterback all game long. The secondary put forth a brilliant effort, with blanket coverage provided by defensive backs Tyler "SCK" Moore, Brett "Gunner" Friedman and Dave "Orient Express" Kim. Offensive juggernaut Matthysse also managed an interception from his safety position. All in all, it was a great team effort and it provided a tremendous amount of motivation for a team who had struggled early but now feels confident of their chances of making the playoffs. After the game, the team enjoyed a celebratory meal at Lindy's Red Lion.

Need Help!

Some of you sign up for Blogger and help me keep this site up to date, ok?
